Course Summary
Tokyo’s crown-jewel left-handed 2400m course with a clean 350m opening straight, sweeping turns, downhill momentum, the Shiroi slope, and a huge 525.9m final stretch. It strongly rewards stamina-backed late acceleration.
Fun Facts
• Hosts the Japanese Derby and Japanese Oaks, the second crown/tiara of the classic Triple Crown/Triple Tiara journey, as well as the international Japan Cup.
• Used for the first Champions Meeting, Taurus Cup.
• Tokai Teio won the 1992 Japan Cup on this course despite a turbulent year in his career.
• International participation in the Japan Cup has declined over time. The strength of Japanese entrants since the early 2000s, the increasingly busy international racing calendar, and logistical challenges have all been discussed as contributing factors. In 2019, the Japan Cup had no foreign participants.
